I love using few ingredients in my cooking to fully savor their combination, textures, and perfumes. Adding them to your cooking, even as simple as a bowl of hot cereal like rice or millet, will accentuate the flavor. They are also fantastic digestive aids. I buy whole spices and grind them at home for more freshness. 

Here are two combinations that I enjoy daily. The quantities are given in whole grains to be freshly ground, mixed together and stored for easy use. Grind them either with electric grinder or with a mortar:

5 teaspoons cumin
3 teaspoons coriander
5 teaspoons fennel
1 teaspoon black pepper
1⁄2 teaspoon fenugreek
1 teaspoon powdered ginger

1 teaspoon turmeric

Great for lentils and beans, dahls and sometimes even a morning bowl of oatmeal with carrots, if you wish to switch from sweet to savor to start your day.

3 teaspoons coriander

5 teaspoons fennel

3 teaspoons white mustard

A fantastic way to use this mix is with cooked grains to give them more flavor. Add them mid-way through cooking your grains. Serve as is or as garnish with a splash of olive oil.
